The North Pennines

Hadrians wallHudgill Farm Barn Cottages are located two miles from the market town of Alston with its wide variety of shops, pubs and eateries.

Further afield, they are located equidistant from the cities of Carlisle, Durham and Newcastle; all being about an hour's drive away. They are all excellent destinations for keen shoppers and historians alike.

For those who like to explore the past, the area has much to offer. Hadrian's Wall is a forty minute drive away and there are numerous National Trust and English Heritage properties and gardens within an hour's drive. Add to this the castles that reflect the area's turbulent past and the local lead mining museums and there is always somewhere to go, whatever the weather or the time of year.

For those who just like being outside, the area has a broad range of attractions:

At a height of 1200 feet above sea level, the cottages enjoy excellent views over the local fells. The area is crisscrossed with public footpaths that were used by the local postman before the advent of motor vehicles. You don't need to be an expert hiker to enjoy a leisurely stroll among the hills or along the banks of the river Nent.

For the serious hill walker, Blencathra in the North Lake district is the nearest "Wainwright" less than an hour's drive away. Further down the road is Skiddaw and then on to the high peaks beyond Keswick. For those looking to avoid the busy Lakes' routes, Teesdale is a delight; wonderfully rugged and with a serious peak in Cross Fell at 2785 feet.

There is also the less strenuous but equally pleasant walk along the South Tyne trail starting at Tyne Head, near Garrigill and following the river South Tyne to Haltwhistle, a distance of 23 miles. The path goes alongside the South Tynedale railway as it passes through Alston.

For walkers who like to follow a historical route, it is possible to walk the length of Hadrian's wall from Carlisle to Wallsend, Newcastle.

Cyclists are welcome at Hudgill Barn cottages with secure housing being provided for cycles when they are not in use. The local, uncongested roads provide physical challenges in their own right, whilst for those looking to follow a prescribed route, the Coast to Coast route runs past the end of the drive and the North Pennine Cycleway (route 68) starts in Alston. Cycle hire is available in Hexham.

Anglers are well catered for in the locality. Day tickets are available from Alston Post Office to fish for salmon and sea trout on the river South Tyne. Fish start to arrive in the river from May onwards with September and October being the peak months. The South Tyne is a spate river and fishes best as the water level is falling. The nearest stocked trout fishery is Langley Dam, about forty minutes away. For further fisheries, have a look at the Northumbrian Water web site.

Alston has its own eighteen-hole golf course situated two miles outside the town on the B6277 Barnard Castle road. There are a number of other courses in the area and for those wanting to experience playing links golf; the numerous courses along the Northumberland coast are only an hour and a half away.

Horse Riding

Horse riding is available at Penrith; a forty minute drive away, while for those who fancy something different, there is the opportunity to ride on Shires  and Clydesdales at the Cumbrian Heavy Horse centre.

Horse Racing

Followers of the turf are spoilt for choice with both National Hunt and Flat racing on offer at a number of local courses including Carlisle, Hexham, Newcastle, Sedgefield, or a 'not to be missed day out' at one of the Bank Holiday meetings at Cartmel in the South Lakes.

If you would like to see the Lake District and Pennines from a different perspective, Eden Soaring Club offers flights in their gliders between April and September. The air field is located just outside Penrith.

We are located in an area with Dark Sky recognition, an excellent place from which to view the night sky.
