The Sky at Night

The Night Sky at Hudgill Farm

Being situated in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty isn’t just about the wonderful landscape that can be experienced in the daytime. The area is also a recognized “Dark Sky Area” and there are spectacular views to be seen in the night sky as light pollution is minimal at Hudgill Farm. For night sky enthusiasts who thrive on total darkness, a trip to Cow Green Reservoir (a thirty minute drive along Teesdale) will satisfy their needs.

A good pair of binoculars will provide novice “Star Gazers” with a wonderful view of the night sky but for those who want to experience it in more detail; we have a 150mm Reflecting Telescope which we are happy to share views through. It must be stressed that we are only “Very Amateur” astronomers!

For those wishing to experience a more organised stargazing experience, Keilder Observatory which is ninety minutes away runs a range of events throughout the year.

During the last week of October, the North Pennines Stargazing Festival takes place at various locations around us. Events include “Pop-up” Planetariums; Talks; Stargazing and Astrophotography.

Information about it can be found on the North Pennines web site.
