Being situated in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty isn’t just about the wonderful landscape that can be experienced in the daytime. The area is also a recognized “Dark Sky Area” and there are spectacular views to be seen in the night sky as light pollution is minimal at Hudgill Farm. For night sky enthusiasts who thrive on total darkness, a trip to Cow Green Reservoir (a thirty minute drive along Teesdale) will satisfy their needs.
A good pair of binoculars will provide novice “Star Gazers” with a wonderful view of the night sky but for those who want to experience it in more detail; we have a 150mm Reflecting Telescope which we are happy to share views through. It must be stressed that we are only “Very Amateur” astronomers!
Visitors to the area may be familiar with the observatory at Keilder Water. We are fortunate enough to have one some ten miles away at Allenheads (www.northpennobservatory.org.uk). We are supporters of the Observatory and a benefit of this to our guests is that if there is a Members Evening during your stay, you are able to attend. To do so requires prior booking and we are limited to five guests. A calendar of events is available on their website.
