The Cottages

Hudgill Farm Barn Cottages are located in the Eden district of Cumbria, just five miles away from the county boundaries of Northumberland and Durham. They are ideally positioned for anyone looking for a relaxing holiday in a peaceful, rural setting. Both cottages look out onto fell sides that are home to a wide range of wildlife. Guests can also enjoy the night time sky in an area, unpolluted by light.

There is a pub and restaurant within ten minutes walking distance and the market town of Alston is two miles away offering a full range of services.

The two cottages are located in a traditional barn which dates back to the 1800s. They offer modern amenities whilst retaining the original character of the barn

There is ample parking and we are happy to accept up to two well behaved pets in each cottage. For larger groups, the two cottages can be linked to sleep up to ten people, via an internal adjoining door.

Both cottages are available for long stays and short breaks throughout the year.

Middlefell View

Middlefell View takes its name from the fell it looks on to. It is a light and airy cottage with a spacious open plan living /dining /kitchen area. The south-facing picture widow was originally the main entrance to the barn and enjoys a window seat that is a delight to lounge in and take in the view. The cottage comfortably sleeps six people in its three bedrooms with their exposed feature beams.

The living area has exposed wooden beams and a wood burning stove. A French door opens out onto the rear lawn. It is furnished to the same high standard as Middlefell View.

The Local Area

Surrounded by public footpaths, guests at Hudgill Farm Barn Cottages are only a few steps away from being able to explore the surrounding fells. In spring and early summer, the fields are filled with flowers and become home to shoreline birds such as curlews and oyster catchers who come inland to breed alongside the local wildlife.

Nature hasn’t been totally responsible for the appearance of the local landscape. The area had used to be the home of the lead mining industry and there is the opportunity to go underground at both Nenthead and Killhope lead mining museums.

Two miles along the road in the opposite direction, lies the town of Alston with its cobbled main street and market cross. The town has a number of good eateries and a range of craft shops to browse in.

Within an hour’s drive, guests have the choice of visiting the Lake District, Teesdale with its waterfalls, Northumberland and its castles, gardens and glorious beaches or historic county Durham and Weardale.

For those with sporting interests, Alston has its own golf course and salmon fishing is available on the river Tyne whilst for cyclists, the coast to coast route passes by the top of the drive
